Interlibrary Loan: Patrons

Purpose

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the process through which borrowers may request material from another library’s collection. The Van Wagenen Library offers this service free of charge to all SUNY Cobleskill faculty, staff, and currently registered students in good standing.  Availability of items is not guaranteed, as we are at the mercy of other libraries' willingness and ability to lend them.

Notification and Pickup

Borrowers will be notified through their Cobleskill campus email address when their materials are available. Items awaiting pickup will be held under the requestor’s name for up to 7 days at the Circulation Desk. If they remain unclaimed after this time, they will be returned to the lending library.

Please note that some borrowers have notified us that the emails are going to their spam folders.  Make sure to allow interlibraryloan@cobleskill.edu so that the messages do not go to spam.

Overdue, Lost, or Damaged Materials

Interlibrary Loan items are subject to the same penalties as those of our own materials such as late fines, replacement costs, academic holds, and suspension of borrowing privileges.  Due dates, overdue fines, and lost item charges are determined by the lending library.

If an item which a patron still needs is due back and the lending library will not grant a renewal, we will request another copy for the patron.

Textbooks

Interlibrary loan is NOT a reliable way to get textbooks.  Many libraries do not collect textbooks, so the number available is low, and many of those which do will not lend them through interlibrary loan.  The Library will attempt to get textbooks through interlibrary loan for our patrons, but we cannot guarantee either that we can find a lender or that they will lend it for the whole semester.  Please plan accordingly.
