Library services during COVID: Library Instruction

Library Instruction

Please contact your library liaison to schedule a library instruction session. Your liaison will provide the instruction for your class or coordinate scheduling with another librarian to provide instruction. Visit our librarian liaison page to find the librarian serving your subject area.

We no longer have an instructional librarian on staff. Our remaining library faculty, Peter Barvoets, April Davies, and Katherine Brent, may not have the time to prepare the in-depth content to the extent that our Instructional Design Librarian was able to do. We can offer basic instruction with a focus on the class or assignment.

Please contact your liaison for more information.

Online Library Instruction Options

Even during the COVID-19 shutdown, the library offers multiple ways library instruction can help meet learning objectives related to introducing, reinforcing, or demonstrating mastery of information literacy skills. Faculty who may be considering including library instruction as part of a course for the first time are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the instruction topics addressed in library sessions by reviewing our Library Instruction Guide.

Faculty wishing to incorporate library instruction into their online course can choose from the following options:

  • embed pre-made library tutorials and videos into a Moodle page,
  • collaborate with a librarian to develop a customized tutorial suited to a specific research assignment, or
  • coordinate a virtual classroom visit by a librarian to your synchronous online class via Blackboard Collaborate or other platform.

In addition, faculty may encourage students working on research assignments to take advantage of the library's chat service to received live research assistance from a librarian. (See the Research Assistance tab of this guide for more information about our chat reference services.)
